Lucid Sound (2005)

After branching out with the summer festival, the team reassembled to tackle the main stage event of 2005 and the biggest production challenge to date with Lucid Sound, a world premiere comedy by Sight Unseen's Andy Mitton.

The production was directed by SUS's own Sam Roberts, music directed by the author, produced by co-founder Mariah Sussman, and played from October 20th through November 19th at the Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica, which was also home to 2004's Monster.   The seasoned ensemble cast includes Jaime Ray Newman, Clark Freeman, Frank Smith, Michael Laurino, Eric Bloom, and Taryn Reneau.

Lucid Sound tells the story of Sue-Ann, a young Floridian woman whose normal life takes a serious left turn into the looking glass when she discovers that the body of water where she fell in love with her husband, Solomon, has disappeared.  And in its place, a cliff juts out.  On this impossible peace of land she meets the young Simeon, a young runaway who claims to be from Norestaplevia, a country Sue-Ann is sure doesn't exist.  But when she returns home to her life, she finds a lot of things don't exist anymore, while new things suddenly do.  Reality itself is beginning to fall away in pieces.  Chaos grows until words and their meaning have begun to change and even her usually timid husband is seriously considering the Satanic faith.  So Sue-Ann, just another American woman who no longer understands her world, sets off with her young lover across the Atlantic to see if there are others out there to be learned from, and to see the mysterious country of Norestaplevia with her own eyes.

Part farce, part political satire, and even part musical theater, Lucid Sound proved a load of fun for both Sight Unseen and the audiences at the Miles Memorial Playhouse - an achievement which sent the group into the new year with momentum and a desire to keep offering new challenges to themselves and to Los Angeles audiences.
