A Year Without Spring ()

For the second production of 2006's season, Sight Unseen stayed with the mission of new works.  In fact, there are a few striking similarities between the two mainstage shows of the season.  SUS would again feature a world premiere with four young actors and the setting, amazingly enough, would stay in the small state of New Hampshire.  The common ground would end there, however, as A Year Without Spring took Sight Unseen to the Odyssey Theatre for the very first time to try out Sight Unseen Co-Founder Andy Mitton's new play.

Not exactly in the tradition of Andy's earlier SUS plays (Graves of San Andreas, Lucid Sound), A Year Without Spring featured no orchestra, no European excursions, but instead offered a simple story that would unfold over the course of one eventful night in the life of Razi Klugman, a small town waitress who has lived in ignorance of the state of the world until she is offered the chance to help sequester an AWOL Marine from the police for one night.  An intimate, character-based, comic drama, A Year Without Spring featured Sight Unseen Co-Founder Mariah Sussman in her biggest role to date with SUS as Razi Klugman.  She was joined by a stellar supporting cast that featured Eric Bloom, Robert Youngs, Michael Laurino, and Jim Neib.

Other fine work on display here was TJ Moore's realistic set with a surreal backdrop of ice and snow that has arrived in June.  Jacqueline Reid provided a challenging and effective lighting design that featured a real-time sunset.  SUS Co-Founder Clark Freeman produced;  Jesse Holland offered his fight choreography expertise.
